Careers Programme

We strive to deliver the best careers service to every one of our students. To make a positive first impression in the world of work, our students' insight, understanding and experience are just as important as the qualifications they achieve with us.

To simplify we sometimes call this part of our school UTCness as it is what makes us unique.

Our vision and intent

From the moment a student joins North East Futures UTC, they take part in our bespoke Careers and Employer Engagement Programme.

Designed with the personal development of our students in mind, the Careers Programme ensures they feel confident enough to make well-informed decisions about their next steps and ready to achieve their career goals.

The whole team behind the UTC absolutely believes in it. The passion is palpable and we know that this can genuinely transform the way that education is delivered in this region.

Gatsby Benchmarks

In 2014, Lord Sainsbury’s Gatsby Charitable Foundation published a report by Professor Sir John Holman, Adviser in Education at the Gatsby Charitable Foundation, titled “Good Career Guidance.”

The report identified eight benchmarks that are the core dimensions of good careers and enterprise provision in schools:
Our careers programme is structured around these benchmarks to ensure our students are receiving the best careers advice and guidance we can offer.

Measuring Impact

North East Futures UTC measures the impact and success of the Careers Education programme from our:

  • Destination data
  • Evaluation and completion of termly Student Employability Skills Reviews
  • Evaluation of employer encounters and careers related learning against the skills and knowledge developed

Careers in the Curriculum

Our teachers are committed to bringing their subjects to life and bringing careers learning into our classrooms. Some of the methods we use include:

  • Inviting our business partners in to deliver workshops and guest lectures
  • Subject career sessions
  • Promoting employability skills such as leadership, team working and communication
  • Discussing career aspirations in class and what careers using a particular subject might be like
  • Employer Led Projects from real life scenarios to expand students' familiarity with different jobs and careers

Careers sessions are delivered termly in all subjects to help students understand the links to different career paths from their learning in those subjects. There are some links below to relevant research studies which support this practice and evidence the impact this has on young people and also some great resource links for teachers who want to develop this learning in their own classroom.
